Prioritize Safety With Window Blinds As A Young Cat Owner

Arthur Menard

If you're a new cat owner, it's wise to make some adjustments at home to ensure that safety won't be a concern. One place you may not have considered making adjustments to is the windows. Your existing window blinds could be dangerous or at risk of damage after bringing home a young cat.

Whether you've recently adopted a kitten or a slightly older cat, replacing your window blinds can boost safety at home and ensure that the blinds remain in excellent condition in the years to come.

Avoid Dangling Strings

One of the most significant concerns to remember regarding your window blinds is the strings dangling down. Not only can this damage your blinds and affect their ability to open and close, but there's also the concern of safety. Your cat will almost certainly be drawn to these strings to bat at and chew on.

Your cat could become injured or even strangled while playing with the blinds. Wrapping the window cords and keeping them tucked high up on the window is one option, but the most effective solution is to avoid them altogether. Choosing blinds without these strings ensures that they won't have the ability to injure your cats.

Consider Vertical Blinds

Cats typically love heights and climbing, making horizontal blinds a concern when you're comparing some of the options for your home. Instead of horizontal blinds, look into the benefits of a vertical design for your window treatments. Along with these blinds not providing a way for your cat to scale up them, their design makes it easy for your cat to poke their head through to look outside.

Since your cat will typically mess with the blinds mainly to look outside, this design allows them to do their natural behavior without any damage to the blinds.

Opt for Wood or Vinyl

As you compare different choices for blinds, you may find that plastic and light metal blinds are easily bent and broken. Whether your cat chews on the blinds or bats at them, wood and vinyl blinds are durable choices that make them easy to maintain.

Before replacing any blinds in your home, you'll have many options to look at to ensure that you make the best purchase with your cats in mind. Instead of being disappointed by your choice in blinds, the above tips can help you feel confident in your purchase and avoid issues related to safety for your young cat.
