Should You Get Vinyl Sliding Windows For Your Home?

Arthur Menard

Are you looking to replace your home's windows, and you're wondering if you should replace your wider windows with sliding windows? Here are some pros and cons to know about this different style of window.

Sliding Vinyl Window Advantages

One of the reasons that people like a sliding window for a part window is because it allows the window to open with a lot of visible glass. You can have a single vertical bar across the height of the window where the two window panes overlap and still have a lot of unobstructed glass. If you used a double-hung window, you'll likely need multiple double-hung windows that break up the glass with horizontal and vertical bars. This is why a sliding window is going to be best for windows that are wider than it is tall.

A sliding window is also going to have a full screen, with it typically being accessible from the outside. This allows you to open either side of the window and still have a screen in front of it to protect your home from bugs. However, this may not be an issue if your sliding windows completely detach from the inside. This makes it easy to access the screen and clean both window panes. It's a more premium feature in a sliding window, but can be worth it.

If you are looking to save money on your new windows, know that a basic vinyl sliding window can be very affordable due to its construction. The window doesn't need to stay in a partially open position without falling down, so fewer mechanisms are involved to create the window. The vinyl material is also very affordable when compared to competing materials like wood.

Sliding Vinyl Window Disadvantages

Be aware that a sliding window is not going to be as energy-efficient as a double-hung window. This is due to the window needing to move along all edges of each window pane, and the contact point between the two panes is not going to be very tight. This can cause drafts to come in between the window panes, which is not good for your HVAC system.

Having the screen attached to the outside of the window can make it difficult to take the screen off when you want to do so. If the window is on the first floor this is typically not a problem, but it could be difficult if the window is on the second floor. You would need to go on a ladder to remove the screen, which may not be an option for you.
