Vinyl Versus Wood Patio Doors: Three Reasons To Choose Vinyl Patio Doors

Arthur Menard

When choosing patio doors, homeowners are spoilt for choice as far as frame materials are concerned. There are several patio door material builds to choose from, including fiberglass, vinyl, wood, and aluminum.

All these materials make durable and aesthetic patio doors, and most homeowners often go for vinyl or wood doors. However, choosing between the two can be a challenge, especially for homeowners who have yet to research the pros and cons of each option.

Thus, if you are trying to decide whether to go for vinyl or wood patio doors, here are three reasons why vinyl patio doors are a good option.

Costs

When adding any installation to your home, you will most likely be operating on a predetermined budget. Therefore, one of the key points to consider when choosing between wood and vinyl patio doors is the cost.

Typically, wood tends to cost more than other materials. As a result, wood patio doors are more expensive than vinyl patio doors. On average, wood patio doors will cost you between $1000 and upwards of $2000, whereas vinyl patio doors will cost you between $300 and $2000 depending on the size of the doors, respectively.

Therefore, if you want to install several patio doors on a tight budget, vinyl patio doors can be more economical than wood patio doors.

Durability

Ideally, when choosing a patio door, you want to go with a material that can withstand the elements and stand the test of time. Without a doubt, both wood and vinyl patio doors can last for a long time, depending on how well you maintain them.

However, because wood is a natural material, it is more susceptible to the elements than vinyl. In most cases, when wood patio doors get exposed to the elements for a long time, they tend to fade. Additionally, if the wood gets exposed to moisture, it will warp, deteriorating the door's structure and aesthetics.

On the other hand, vinyl is more resistant to natural elements than wood. As a result, vinyl patio doors are better at resisting damages resulting from exposure to natural elements. Thus, making vinyl patio doors more durable than wood patio doors.

Maintenance Costs

Before selecting any patio door, it is essential to consider the level of maintenance required to keep the door in good condition. Remember, maintenance costs can easily become high when picking a patio door with high maintenance requirements.

As mentioned earlier, wood is quite sensitive to the elements. Thus, it requires getting treated or painted regularly to protect it from elements such as pests, moisture, and temperature. On the other hand, vinyl doesn't require much maintenance because it is less prone to damage the elements.

Thus, wood patio doors tend to have higher maintenance costs than vinyl patio doors. As a result, if you are not willing to regularly spend a small fortune on maintenance costs, a vinyl patio door is a better choice than a wood patio door.
