Double Vs. Triple Pane Windows: Which Is Better?

Arthur Menard

The days of single panes of glass in a home's windows are long past. Most homeowners know that double pane windows are the way to go, and these windows have quickly become the industry standard. There is another option to compare, though — the triple pane window.

Efficiency

Double pane windows became popular because they provide so much more energy-efficient compared to single pane options. Each window features a double pane of glass with a clear but insulating glass between them. The result is less heat loss in winter and less heat gain in summer, resulting in lower energy costs and more comfort. Triple pane further increases insulation, making them a good option in areas where extreme temperatures require better efficiency.

Natural Light

Each layer of glass in a window will reduce the amount of light that passes through. On bright, sunny sides of the home, the reduction in natural light is negligible at best. With windows that receive minimal natural lighting, though, the difference can be much more noticeable. If slightly increased efficiency isn't desired, then double-pane windows will allow in a bit more natural light compared to triple pane.

Noise Reduction

For those living on a busy street, noise issues can be a real concern. Noise passes quite easily through glass compared to other materials, so a lot of windows can result in a noisier home. Fortunately, each layer of material you add to the window reduces the noise. Double pane windows have three layers acting as a noise buffer — two panes of glass and one layer of gas. Triple panes provide five buffering layers — three pieces of glass and two layers of gas. Naturally, triple pane windows are better at noise reduction.

Security

Thicker glass is usually harder to break through. The more panes of glass, the more secure the window. Of course, increased difficulty doesn't mean impossible, as a dedicated intruder could break through triple-pane windows with a few hits. The thickness will discourage most possible intruders though since they are likely trying to act quickly without drawing anyone's attention.

Installation

There are some installation concerns. Most homes are designed for single and double-pane window thicknesses. You can usually buy stock replacement windows and installation is a straightforward replacement. Triple pane windows have more depth, though. Your installers may need to upgrade the framing around the windows before they can install them, which can take longer and increase the cost.

Contact a replacement window service if you have further questions about multi-pane windows.
