How To Better Protect Your Windows From Future Hurricanes

Arthur Menard

If you live in an area that is prone to getting hurricanes, or simply has the slim chance of getting hit with one, you are going to want to prepare your home. This way, your property, and therefore your loved ones inside of the home, will be fully protected. One of the first things you will want to protect is the windows of your home, especially the windows that face the direction that the majority of water and wind would come from. Here are a few examples of things you will want to consider doing in order to properly protect your residential windows:

Have Hurricane-Proof Windows Installed

To give your home better hurricane protection, you will want to have hurricane-proof windows installed. While it may cost a little to make this upgrade, it is substantially cheaper than dealing with the aftermath of broken windows and stormwater all throughout your home. If your budget does not allow for you to replace all of the windows in your home at the same time, you will want to start with the windows that face the direction of incoming winds and the direction where hurricane waters would come from. Since those are the windows that will absorb the greatest impact, those will be the windows you want to replace first. Then, as your finances allow, you can replace the rest of the windows in the house.

Get Boards Ready

If you are not yet able to buy any hurricane-proof windows, you will want to at least get some boards ready. These would be boards that can be quickly grabbed and attached to the outside of your windows, covering all of them, in order to protect the glass from shattering. Of course, you would have to be home and have advance warning of the impending storm, but the boards can help protect your windows. If any repairs need to be made after the storm has left, the amount of work that should need to be done to your windows should be minimal.

Now that you have a small list of things you can do to protect your windows, you will want to do what you can in order to take action right away. The last thing you would want to do is to put this off for too long, as you just never know how quickly a new storm or hurricane can hit your area. You want to be as prepared as possible for when such instances do occur.
