Things To Do When Installing Custom Windows

Arthur Menard

Putting in custom windows is a superb way to make your mark on a home or a place of business. The job, however, can be more complex than you might anticipate. By preparing for these four issues, you can see that installing your new windows will go as smoothly as possible.

Measure Twice, Install Once

Regardless of whether you're placing custom windows products in a new building or an existing one, getting the measurements right is a key part of the process. It's best to have the installers take the measurements themselves, but you should also take your own just to verify. Width is measured based on the distances between the top, middle and bottom jambs. Height goes from the highest point of the sill to the peak of the window opening. For most models, the depth should be the distance between the inside trim and outside blind stop with a further 3.25 inches added.

You Might Need a Permit

If you're involved in a new build, there's a pretty good chance your construction permits already have you covered. Should you wish to remodel, however, a permit might be required if you're cutting a new hole in the building or expanding an existing one. Conversely, if you're making use of an existing hole, you will most likely not need to get a permit.

Still, it's worth talking to your local code enforcement official just to be on the safe side. It is possible that specific custom window products that change the shape of the hole where the window goes may lead to you needing a permit.

Moving Items Out of the Room

Installing window products can get a little rough, so you should make a point to clear out anything in the room where work will be done. This includes getting all furniture out, and you may also want to take down mirrors and picture frames from the walls in the room and any adjoining rooms. It's also wise to take out any items that might cause installers to slip, such as throw rugs.

Accounting for Time

Once an installation of custom windows gets started, it usually takes between 30 minutes to a half hour to put in each one. You should also factor in about 15 minutes for signing off on any documents and rendering any payments for the project. It's prudent to have a backup day scheduled, too.
