Replacement windows can be a good investment to improve the energy efficiency of your home but there are other improvements that need to be done finish them. When you have replacement windows installed you are going to want to update the installation and seal around the cracks with caulking. Here are some tips to help you finish your replacement window project and seal up all the air leaks.

1. Options to improve installation behind existing window casings

The insulation behind the window casing protects against air leaks that cause energy loss. Once you have removed old windows, it is a good idea to remove a piece of interior trim around the window to see if there is insulation. If there is poor insulation, improve it by adding batten insulation in between the window casing and wood framing of the opening. Be careful using spray foam insulation that comes in a can because it can damage window casings if there is no window in it. It is best to wait until after new windows have been installed if you plan on using a can of spray foam for this task.

2. Caulking and installing molding around replacement window frames

When you install replacement windows, there are going to be cracks around where the new window was set in the opening. This can be fixed by adding a bead of caulking around the perimeter of the new opening. Thin molding can also be used to trim around the openings of replacement windows when there are larger gaps, which you will also want to caulk around to ensure the new replacement windows do not have any air leaks.

3. Caulking the molding around the existing window frames

In addition to insulation and sealing around new windows, you will also want to caulk the old casing trim. The old caulking can be removed with a putty knife to clean the window casing trim for new caulking. In addition, you may want to consider painting the old window casings before you begin these improvements so that everything looks like new window you finish your project.
