3 Ways To Get Better Quality Sleep

Arthur Menard

Sleep can become a nightmare if you have problems falling asleep or staying asleep. You might think that the situation is hopeless and that you are doomed to a life of bad-quality sleep. This doesn't have to be the case. There are a few things that you can do to ensure that you get the high-quality rest you deserve.

Avoid Screens Before Bed

One surefire way to guarantee that you will have a hard time falling asleep is by staying glued to a screen, be it your TV, laptop or smartphone, right up until you have to sleep. Your body starts to naturally produce melatonin, a hormone that makes you feel sleepy, as it starts to get dark. If you are staring at screens, the production of melatonin is suppressed and it becomes harder to fall asleep.

Staring at a screen not only make it harder to fall asleep, but also it reduces your quality of sleep as well. In one study, it was shown that people who used screens before bed have shorter REM cycles, which is the high-quality sleep you need to feel well-rested.

Use Blackout Blinds or Curtains

More than just not using screens before bed, you should strive to sleep in near pitch-black darkness. Artificial lighting, be it from a street lamp outside, lights from outside your door or leaving the TV on, leads to lower quality sleep. When your optic nerve detects light, it kicks in signals to start making cortisol and raising your body temperature, which are both bodily signals that it's time to wake up, decreasing restful sleep.

In addition to keeping your body on high alert, one study found that people who slept in a room that had light equal to a single street lamp shining into their room were 65% more likely to develop depression.

One way to combat these negative effects is to buy heavy-duty blackout curtains or blinds. These types of blinds and shades completely block out light that might shine in through your window.

Keep a Sleep Schedule

As tempting as it is to stay up late on the weekend and then sleep late, it is better to maintain a set sleep schedule. By keeping consistent sleep-wake times, you are setting your body's internal clock. This makes it easier to fall asleep and wake up in the mornings.

Follow these simple tips and see if they help you improve your relationship with sleep.
