Three Ways To Change Your Exterior With New Doors And Give The Interior Natural Light

Arthur Menard

In older homes, one of the problems that you may face when remodeling is a lack of natural light. While adding more and larger windows is often the solution, there are also some features that can be added to your home with exterior door improvements. Consider sliding doors for back entrances and side lights for other doors. Here are some of the door improvements that will improve the look of the exterior of your home, while adding natural light to the interior:

1. Making Rear Entrances Brighter with Sliding Door Options

Rear entrances of homes are one of the best areas to do improvements with doors. You may want to consider adding sliding doors instead of conventional single or double doors. If you want to make your home more connected with the outdoor space, consider making an entire wall of sliding doors in areas around a deck or patio. This will allow you to open up the indoor space to integrate into a modern outdoor living space.

2. Installing Larger Door Openings with Side Lights That Allow More Natural Light

Another option you may want to consider is using larger door openings with side lights. What are side lights? The glass windows on either side of a door frame that are not part of the actual door are consider side lights because they allow natural light to come through. In areas where sliding doors are not often used, such as a front entrance, using doors with side lights is a great option to improve the look of your home and add more natural light. Side lights can also be installed as narrow windows beside existing doors that you do not plan on replacing.

3. Using Glass Doors Where Possible to Give Your Home More Natural Light

In many older homes, some of the doors may be solid or only have small windows. Consider using full glass in areas that have solid wood doors. If you are concerned about security for a front entrance, talk with the door installation service about other improvements like adding an additional metal security door with bars. The decorative metalwork will keep your home safe, while still allowing light to come through the new glass door behind it.

These are some of the ways that adding new doors to your home can help to improve its appearance and give you more natural light. Contact a window and door service to help with some of these improvements to the exterior of your home. Click here to learn more about exterior door installation.
